Minimalist's Linux Cluster
Using barebone PC components and NIC's, we construct a linux cluster which
has 2-dimensional mesh structure. This cluster has smaller footprint, is less
expensive, and use less power compared to conventional linux cluster. Here, we
report our experience in building such a machine and discuss our current

Automatic Volume Control Based on Background Noise Characteristics
In this study, we propose a novel technique for automatic volume control (AVC). Contemporary AVC systems operate according to background noise level. This paper presentsan AVC system that adaptively updates the audio volumeconsidering the frequency characteristics of the background noise. From the experiments, we conclude that the developed techniques can be successfully used for various acoustic environments
Acute dystonia by droperidol during intravenous patient-controlled analgesia in young patients.
Patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) is an important means for postoperative analgesia with parenteral opioid. However, postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) remains a major problem with a PCA system. Droperidol is used in PCA to prevent PONV. Extrapyramidal reactions by droperidol are, however, occasionally induced. We describe two cases of severe extrapyramidal hypertonic syndrome with an intravenous administration of droperidol in PCA in young patients, following orthopedic surgery
Environmental considerations of plastic behaviors for automobile applications
AbstractIt is well known fact that the thermo-mechanical behaviors of polymeric materials are strongly influenced by environmental factors, and, for automobiles, the mechanical properties of interior plastic structures are noticeably changed by being repeatedly exposed to environments such as sun light and rains. As the properties change, mechanical fits such as fasteners and clips in automobiles lose their tightness, creating unexpected noises. To consider Buzz, Squeak and Rattle (BSR) from initial stage of the interior design, it is very important to obtain, analyze and understand the structural behaviors of the materials under environmental changes as well as time. In this report, the mechanical property changes of the plastics for automobiles are measured to investigate the temperature and humidity effects. The samples are undergone different temperature and humidity conditions, and regularly taken out to measure the thermo-mechanical properties. The data are compared with the original samples, and analyzed for the properties change. Atomic arrangement of van der Waals heterostructures using X-ray scattering and crystal truncation rod analysis
Vanadium diselenide (VSe2) has intriguing physical properties such as
unexpected ferromagnetism at the two-dimensional limit. However, the
experimental results for room temperature ferromagnetism are still
controversial and depend on the detailed crystal structure and stoichiometry.
Here we introduce crystal truncation rod (CTR) analysis to investigate the
atomic arrangement of bilayer VSe2 and bilayer graphene (BLG) hetero-structures
grown on a 6H-SiC(0001) substrate. Using non-destructive CTR analysis, we were
able to obtain electron density profiles and detailed crystal structure of the
VSe2/BLG heterostructures. Specifically, the out-of-plane lattice parameters of
each VSe2 layer were modulated by the interface compared to that of the bulk
VSe2 1T phase. The atomic arrangement of the VSe2/BLG heterostructure provides
deeper understanding and insight for elucidating the magnetic properties of the
van der Waals heterostructure.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figure
Epigallocatechin-3-gallate protects toluene diisocyanate-induced airway inflammation in a murine model of asthma
AbstractEpigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), a major form of tea catechin, has anti-allergic properties. To elucidate the anti-allergic mechanisms of EGCG, we investigated its regulation of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP-9) expression in toluene diisocyanate (TDI)-inhalation lung tissues as well as TNF-α and Th2 cytokine (IL-5) production in BAL fluid. Compared with untreated asthmatic mice those administrated with EGCG had significantly reduced asthmatic reaction. Also, increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation by TDI inhalation was diminished by administration of EGCG in BAL fluid. These results suggest that EGCG regulates inflammatory cell migration possibly by suppressing MMP-9 production and ROS generation, and indicate that EGCG may be useful as an adjuvant therapy for bronchial asthma
